Study: Ruidoso 5th best place to live in New Mexico

Ruidoso recently was named the fifth best place to live in New Mexico by HomeSnacks.net.

The North Carolina-based firm specializes in delivering information in bite sizes on home markets and communities through the United States. The staff credited the village's move up from seventh place last year to a strong showing in its unemployment rate and because of the many activities, celebrations, events and natural attractions in the area.

Ruidoso's population was listed as 7,757 from the 2010 census, the median home value as: $214,400, the unemployment rate as 5.7 percent.

Mountain biking is a favorite sport in the Ruidoso area.

HomeSnacks based in Raleigh, N.C., combines recent data from the Census, FBI, OpenStreetMaps, and dozens of other sources into bite-sized studies to help readers understand what it’s like to live in different communities across the country, according to information from the company.

"We have been professionally ranking cities, neighborhoods, counties, and states across America for over five years," the website states. "In total, we have 61 categories, and growing. We want to help people find a place to live that fits them personally. To do that, we paint a picture of what’s happening in a region based on “Friday Night Science,” how a person might argue at a bar. To do that, we gather data from around the web to help determine a wide array of factors about where you live, things like safety, desirability, and culture."

The Ruidoso Convention Center is one of the public places where special events are staged.

Then they use images, maps, and digestible summaries for everyone to get a sense of what life is like around each state in America.

Ruidoso is no stranger to Top 10 lists, being named one of the best places to live in the country by multiple outlets over the past ten years, the study noted. And that tends to happen when home prices hit $214,400 at the median.

"There's more to New Mexico than aliens, amazing sunsets, and the Animas River. This Southwestern state actually has plenty of great places to call home," the study states, noting that 2 million people call it home.

In a new event last year, a pumpkin roll down one of the mountain village's popular streets raised money for the Ruidoso Midtown Association.

"We think there must be something magical about New Mexico's best places to live. Notables like Julia Roberts, Gene Hackman, and Game of Thrones' author George R.R. Martin wouldn't just live anywhere. They love New Mexico's great people and good 'ol desert livin'.

"Whether you're a fan of UFOs, the University of New Mexico Lobos, or catching a rodeo in Ruidoso, the good people in New Mexico's best places are waiting to show you why living in their corner of the Land of Enchantment deserves a second look."

The staff wrote that New Mexico has so many great cities, that a person could literally throw a dart at the state and live happily wherever it landed.

"So, you can understand how difficult it was to narrow down a list of the top ten best places," they noted, but they chose Corrales as the best place for 2020.

"We invite you to grab yourself a green chili cheeseburger, find a remote spot to watch the sunset, and read on to see what other places made the top ten."

The website also breaks down the cheapest places and the best places to raise a family in New Mexico.
