2019 Mahindra Thar new generation spied for the first time before launch

Mahindra Thar, first launched in 2010, is set to get a new generation update. This new Thar which has been spied on test, sported heavy camouflage, but appears wider as compared to its current version. It gets a new and larger ladder frame chassis; that made its debut recently in the Mahindra Marazzo and also gets a host of modern touches and overall refined design.

Spy shots of the new Mahindra Thar are doing the rounds while the off roader could be making its presence felt at the 2020 Auto Expo. It is expected to retain its CJ5 shape while the new platform will ensure that the new Thar off roader complies with new safety norms under Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) regulations.

Overall performance will also be improved with coil spring suspension on all four wheels which could relate to a smoother ride.

As compared to the current generation, the interiors of the new Mahindra Thar could come in loaded with features. Among these will be a large touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, a 2 DIN audio system, digital instrument console, multi function steering wheel and memory seats.

Reports suggest that the new Mahindra Thar could come in with newly developed petrol and diesel engine options. The current model is powered by 2.6L MDI and 2.5L TCI-CRDe diesel powertrains, while the new Thar could get a new 1.5L petrol and 2.0L diesel motor. The engines could be jointly developed by Mahindra and Mahindra Marazzo and will be complying with stricter BS VI emission norms.

It is not yet revealed if these engines will be mated to an automatic gearbox but considering the fact that off roaders are also getting automatic gearbox options, it could be a possibility. It is too early to estimate pricing of the new generation Mahindra Thar but while the current model is priced from around Rs.9.5 lakhs, the new Thar could well exceed the Rs.10 lakh mark.
