NEWBURY — Pilots from all over the Northeast gathered at Plum Island Airport over the weekend to take part in a radio-controlled jet plane rally.

RC scale model jets using real jet engines, burning jet fuel, kerosene and diesel, took over the skies over the airport, shooting up to speeds of 200 mph.

Steve Goler of Salem was among the participants.

Onlookers could hear the jets roar and see the hot jet wash being put out by the aircraft as they flew over.

The planes were modeled after U.S. fighter jets as well as Russian and European aircraft.

The aircraft range in price from $4,000 to $80,000, according to some of the owners.

The festival ran from Friday through Monday, with some pilots camping out in their trailers and recreational vehicles with large trailers to haul the aircraft.
