SALEM — Police said an 18-year-old Everett woman was injured Saturday night in a drive-by shooting on Chase Street.

The woman, who was visiting a friend in Salem, was sitting in the driver's seat of her car Saturday night when five gunshots were fired in her direction from another car going by, Salem police Capt. Frederick Ryan said Sunday.

The shooting was reported just before 11 p.m. Saturday, he said. When police arrived, they found the woman with a laceration on her stomach.

The woman was taken to Salem Hospital with what Ryan called non-life-threatening injuries.

"The bullet didn't penetrate," Ryan said.

There are no suspects as of Sunday afternoon, but Ryan said the shooting appears to be retaliatory and related to tensions from an issue outside of Salem.

"We feel that this was a targeted incident," he said.

Ryan also said police are getting limited cooperation from witnesses.

Salem police detectives are working with police in other cities as well as state police to investigate.
