Central Kansas Free Fair cancels public events for 2020

The Salina Journal

The Central Kansas Free Fair Board announced it will cancel all public events for the 2020 fair this year.

The board announced on Facebook that, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision was made in consideration with the Dickinson County health officer, Kansas State University Research and Extension, Kansas Department of Agriculture and city and county officials.

Public events not happening this year include the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo, demolition derby, tractor pull, parade carnival, open class judging and other entertainment events.

The board also said it took into consideration the financial impact the pandemic has placed on families, businesses and the fair board.

According to the board, the focus of the 2020 fair will be given to 4-H members and the board wants to give those members the opportunity to have exhibits judged in a safe and healthy environment. Because of that, judging events, including livestock shows, will not be open to the public and access to the fairgrounds will be limited to exhibitors, their immediate family, event volunteers and staff.

The fair board said it will make efforts to video record shows and photograph exhibits so the public can view them online.

Finally, the board said the sale committee will give additional updates on the livestock auction, with steps being taken to make sure exhibitors receive recognition for their hard work and dedication.
