SALISBURY City Council has announced today that the Christmas lights will be switched on by athlete Colin Jackson this week.

Colin made his career as a sprint and hurdling athlete, setting world records and winning a silver Olympic medal in 1988.

He now works as a broadcaster with BBC Athletics, and has covered major sporting events including the London Olympic Games in 2012, the Rio Games in 2016 and the 2017 World Championships.

He has consistently starred in both factual entertainment shows and reality challenges, notably being runner-up in Strictly Come Dancing, where he became the first male dancer to score a perfect 40.

The Christmas Lights Switch On event will take place on Thursday (November 15) from 6pm until 8pm in Salisbury Market Place.

Local performers will include Salisbury and Romsey Rock Choir, Sticky Toffee Jazz and local tribute band ABBA’s Angels.

The crowd can also enjoy walkabout entertainment this year from the Jester and Bouncing Reindeer.

Colin Jackson will be joined on stage by the Mayor of Salisbury, Cllr Mike Osment and Father Christmas for the big countdown to switch on at approximately 7.15pm followed by a firework display.
