A PACKED programme of music, yoga, workshops, virtual exhibitions and more will keep residents entertained online to celebrate Salisbury 2020, City On the move.

Salisbury 2020: Big Weekend online events take place on May 29, 30, and 31.

A statement from the Salisbury 2020 partners said: "This online weekend is packed with music sessions, yoga, family workshops, sports training, quizzes, fascinating talks and virtual exhibitions based around the original themes of Salisbury 2020.

"The themes of movement; engineering/technological movement, physical movement, and spiritual/intellectual movement, providing the whole community with opportunities to think, to move, to celebrate, to reflect and to learn."

Salisbury 2020, City on the move, was planned to be Salisbury’s celebratory year, offering twelve months of events and activities inspired by the theme of movement, to mark the 800th anniversary of the founding of Salisbury Cathedral and the emergence of the modern city.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the introduction of social distancing has meant plans have had to be changed, shelved or cancelled.

The Salisbury 2020 partners added: "But the city’s forebears spirit of endeavour remains strong in Salisbury today, and collectively the city on the move partners wanted to find a way to carry on working together and to continue to celebrate this significant anniversary for the Cathedral and the City.

"In 1220 the people of Salisbury came together to build a new cathedral. This year we find ourselves in unprecedented times where, at the moment, we can not come together. The Big Weekend is a small way to continue to celebrate our city’s past and help move us forward."

The Salisbury 2020 partners are Salisbury Cathedral, Chalke Valley History Festival, Salisbury City Council , Salisbury Literary Festival, Salisbury Live, Salisbury Museum, Sarum College, VisitWiltshire, Wessex Archaeology, Wiltshire Creative, Salisbury BID, Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire and Swindon Sports Partnership.
