A driver fleeing a crash allegedly caused a second collision that badly injured another driver Wednesday in the La Presa community of Spring Valley, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The driver suspected in the back-to-back collisions suffered minor injuries in the second crash. Medics took the 19-year-old man to a hospital, and he was expected to be jailed on suspicion of reckless driving and hit and run.

The first crash, which involved a Honda Accord and a Toyota Camry, occurred about 11:20 a.m. near Paraiso Avenue and San Francisco Street in La Presa. The crash resulted in minor property damage, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said.

The Honda driver, with a passenger in the front seat, then fled south on Paraiso Avenue, Garrow said. Just a block away, the driver failed to yield at an intersection and T-boned a Volkswagen CC headed east on Jamacha Boulevard.

The impact caused the sedans to spin out of control and hit two vehicles parked near the southeastern corner of the intersection.

The front-seat passenger of the Honda ran away and had not been located as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Honda driver and the female driver of the Volkswagen were taken to a hospital. An update on their conditions was not immediately available.

Garrow said investigators did not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crashes.
