Santa Cruz made the national news again when Chief Andy Mills “took a knee” in solidarity with demonstrators on Saturday. While he is rightly commended for doing so, there is a deafening silence about those we have to thank for creating that moment. Joy Flynn and her colleagues gave us a model of a safe, meaningful, socially-distanced event. In the face of the whirlwind of praise for Mills, failure to acknowledge the labor and leadership of the black women who made that moment possible is bitterly ironic.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
