UFC 242: Dustin Poirier’s comments ‘childish’ and ‘distasteful’, says Colby Covington

  • Covington hits back after ‘The Diamond’ calls him a ‘sell out’ for trash talking Jorge Masvidal
  • Former interim welterweight champion says Poirier angry because he picked Khabib Nurmagomedov to beat him

Colby Covington has hit back at “childish” Dustin Poirier for his “distasteful” comments at the UFC 242 post-event press conference.

Poirier called Covington a “f****** sell out” for trash talking their fellow American Top Team fighter Jorge Masvidal – whom Covington now calls his “ex-best friend”.

“I thought they were very distasteful comments,” Covington told Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. “I’m not a sell out, I bought in. He [Poirier] tapped out, that’s what happened.”

The former interim welterweight champion said Poirier was mad at him because he picked Khabib Nurmagomedov to beat him at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi.

“There’s a reason they call me the people’s champ. I had to give the people America’s pick of the week, I had to give them my honest opinion. I thought this was land of the free, home of the brave, freedom of speech. Sorry I can’t have an opinion,” he said.

“I wanted to help the people out and honestly I knew Khabib was a better fighter. He thought Robbie Lawler was a better fighter, he picked Robbie to beat me. Did I get my feelings hurt? No, I went out there and beat him. So Dustin just needs to stop making excuses and trying to blame me for his loss. Sorry you suck, you’re not the best fighter in the world.”

UFC 242: Dustin Poirier suggests he could retire after Khabib Nurmagomedov loss

An emotional Poirier was speaking after a third-round submission defeat by Nurmagomedov in their title unification fight.

“I don’t know why he’s acting like a childish little kid,” Covington said. “He should get a sponsor from Kleenex with that Emmy Award-winning act in the post-fight press conference, ‘Oh, my dream, blah, blah, blah’.”

“Me and Dustin haven’t trained together in a long time, at least a year or two, we haven’t been friends in the gym,” he said. “Yeah, we train at the same team, American Top Team, I’m thankful for the gym and [coach] Dan Lambert and everything he does for us. But everybody knows this is an individual sport, we’re independent contractors. I’m out to get mine.”
