Demolition crews began the process of taking down the Alaskan Way Viaduct this week by punching through the Columbia Street onramp.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Kiewit Infrastructure West, prime contractor for the $40 million job, say that most of the demolition will be completed by June 1 so that the up-to-90-decibel cacophony will end before summer tourist crowds arrive.

If you’re curious about what the noise sounds like but can’t get down to the site, the video below gives a taste of what the area will sound like for the next 5 1/2  months.
