FITCHBURG — A new American flag is flying over the Montachusett Opportunity Council offices on River Street today thanks to the watchful eye of a young girl.

Ava Reed, daughter of MOC Executive Director Kevin Reed, noticed the flag in front of the administration building was torn about a week ago. After she spotted the damage, she insisted it be replaced.

On Thursday, Congresswoman Lori Trahan came to the city and handed Ava a replacement flag, a flag which was flown over the nation’s Capitol Building.

“[Ava’s] the real reason we got that flag,” said Reed. “It was really good to see that patriotism from her.”

Rep. Trahan took a short tour of the building which was purchased by the Montachusett Opportunity Council last year.

Trahan said she was excited to learn about the partnership between the council and Headwall Photonics, a manufacturer that also uses the building.

“This is a remarkable partnership,” said Rep. Trahan. “We see great corporate citizens in Headwell forging a great relationship with MOC.”

Mayor Stephen L. DiNatale the partnership is great for the city. “We’re coexisting and everyone is being successful,” he said.

According to Reed, Headwall needed someone to purchase the building last year and Montachusett Opportunity Council was in need of additional office space; so, it was the perfect opportunity for both parties.

“It’s nice to know there are private citizens downstairs and we’re up here changing the world in our own way,” said Reed.

The Montachusett Opportunity Council, among other things, runs childcare programming, volunteer income tax programs, financial literacy programs, adult education and housing programs, and they weatherize homes.

Reed said these programs are critical to this area because they provide opportunities for residents who might not otherwise have them.

“MOC deals with issues that are really important for the people in need that I have in the city,” said DiNatale.

“These are services that members of the community rely on,” said Rep. Trahan.
