FITCHBURG — The Fitchburg State University men’s soccer team fell to the Saints of Emmanuel College, 2-0, in non-conference action on Thursday night at Elliot Field.

Emmanuel (1-1-0) broke the stalemate 34:02 into the first frame. Sophomore Alec Erskine converted on a penalty kick, lacing the shot past Falcons netminder junior Sebastian Jaramillo for the 1-0 advantage.

Following the break, the Saints doubled their margin at 57:35 when Erskine knotted his second goal of the game off a crisp cross from the right wing by classmate Kyle King.

Freshman Alexander Loyd finished with team-best three shots in the contest for Fitchburg State (0-1-1). Senior Jonathan Ferrarini made four saves for the Saints in the complete-game effort.

Up next, the Falcons will travel to Becker College for Saturday’s noon showdown.

Boys’ soccer

North Middlesex 5, Maynard 3 Evan Gaibor scored a pair of goals for the Patriots, and teammates Alban Baboci, Casey McCarthy and Roody Clemetson added one goal each in the victory. North Middlesex assists went to Callum Hammill, Max Patenaude and Jacob Richard.

Ayer Shirley 2, Tahanto 0 Ariel Velasquez scored in the 11th minute, and Fayad Bashir added an insurance goal 10 mintues into the second half as the Panthers won their season opener. Nick Granger made seven saves to earn the shutout, and Sebastian Costa assisted on the second goal.

Ayer Shirley’s midfielders were outstanding in the victory.

Next up, the Panthers will travel to face Murdock on Tuesday.

Girls’ soccer

Douglas 11, St. Bernard’s 0 The Bernardians will try to get back on track when they travel to face St. Peter-Marian on Monday.

Boys’ cross country

Littleton 23, Ayer Shirley 36 Ayer’s Dana Maloney took first place, finishing Littleton’s 3.1-mile course in 18:27. Also for the Panthers, Will Schilp was fourth in 18:43.7. Littleton was led by Alex Johnson (2nd, 18:41), Bona Bradshaw (3rd, 18:3.4) and Garrrett Rieden (5th, 19:05).

Girls’ cross country

Littleton 19, Ayer Shirley 36 Littleton took the top three spots at Littleton’s 3.1-mile course, as Riley Clark (20:56), McKenzie Clark (21:23) and Calli Morvay (22:49) finished first through third, respectively.

For Ayer Shirley, Mairead Hanley (24:05) placed fourth, and Gwen Connors (24:30) was fifth.

High school golf

Westboro 218, Leominster 226 Leominster opened the season with a hard-fought defeat. Senior co-captain Richie DeCarolis was the match medalist with a 4-over-par 39. Also posting qualifying scores for the Blue Devils were Alessandro Conte (44), Colby Julsonnet (47), Brady Carlin (48) and Alex Nelson (48).

Leominster next travels to Holden Hills on Monday to take on Wachusett Regional.
