FITCHBURG — A traffic stop led to a drug trafficking charge against a Fitchburg woman found in possession of 50 grams of cocaine Friday night, authorities say.

Jennifer Cruz, a 27-year-old passenger in the vehicle stopped by police, was also found in possession of two cellphones, one of which she broke in half, according to a state police press release.

A trooper assigned to the Troop C Community Action Team stopped a Honda Accord for “extremely dark front windows” at around 8:45 p.m. Friday, police said. After the traffic stop, the driver, and the vehicle’s passenger — later identified as Cruz — allegedly provided inconsistent information to the trooper.

According to police, the pair did not know each other’s names.

Cruz, who was allegedly not wearing a seat belt, was found in possession of two bags of cocaine, each weighing 25 grams, police said. The two cellphones, including the damaged device, were also found in her possession, according to police.

Police transported Cruz to the Leominster Barracks, where she was charged with trafficking a Class B substance, tampering or destruction of evidence and failure to wear a safety belt.

Cruz was held on $15,000 cash bail, according to police. She is slated to be arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on Monday.

The driver of the vehicle, who was not identified by police, was issued a motor vehicle citation for illegally tinted windows, police said.
