FITCHBURG — The Housing Authority has been awarded over half a million dollars for the C.J. Durkin Apartments by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development and will officially announce the grant at an event Wednesday at the complex at 50 Day St.
The grant will be used to remodel some of the units at the Durkin Apartments to make them more accessible for those with physical limitations. In addition, it will be used to remove common hallway and door barriers.
The event will also honor the establishment of the Durkin Apartments, which first opened its doors in 1979. The Durkin Apartments were one of the first affordable elderly housing communities to also have built in congregate units to assist with aging in place.
During the event, the family of C.J. Durkin, who was a longtime Housing Authority board member, will be present.
The doors will be open at 12:45 p.m. and the even will begin at 1 p.m. Attending the event will be Mayor Stephen L. DiNatale, members of the FHA Board of Commissioners including FHA Board Chair Linde E. Byrne. Refreshments will be served. The public and the residents of the Durkin Apartments are also invited.
