FITCHBURG — Fifty years ago, LUK Inc. was founded on the premise of providing services that met the needs of the Central Massachusetts community.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, LUK has remained open to provide essential services. Like many organizations, LUK has faced the difficult task of adapting to new health and safety needs, while thinking creatively to provide the same high quality services to clients.

LUK recently received a generous donation of 9,000 facial coverings from an anonymous donor, with an additional 16,000 on the way. This donation falls under the statewide effort, “Well Covered Community,” which seeks to fit 5% of the Massachusetts population with a facial covering.

“With these facial coverings, LUK will ensure that we are conducting essential mental health community work in a safe way, by making facial coverings available to the children and families we work with,” LUK CEO, Beth Barto, said.

“The volume of facial coverings given will also allow LUK to continue on our vision of partnering to create communities where all people are safe, healthy, and resilient, by having the ability to support several non-profit agencies, who will respond by paying it forward to their communities,” she added.

The masks distributed by LUK will not only help to ensure that other local non-profits are able to continue with their services, but help with the greater goal of slowing the spread of COVID-19, by fitting all clients and their family members with facial coverings.

Leominster’s Spanish American Center was one of the recipients of masks.

“After being closed for eight weeks due to the pandemic, The Spanish American Center would like to continue safe practices given by the CDC by utilizing facial coverings on all employees, as well as issuing a facial coverings to individuals coming to pick up food and supplies,” Executive Director of the Center Neddy Latimer said.

Thanks to the generosity of LUK’s anonymous donor, LUK will be able to continue to honor its history of adapting to community needs by taking an active role in promoting the safety of the Central Massachusetts community and ensuring that the COVID-19 crisis does not create a barrier to essential services.

LUK is a nonprofit multiservice agency dedicated to improving the safety, health, and emotional well-being of youth, families and adults. As a community-based organization, LUK offers an array of child and family services through five regional offices in Central Massachusetts: Fitchburg, Boylston, Webster, and Worcester. LUK’s mission is to improve the lives of children, families and adults so that they can fulfill their unique potential.
