Super Mart robbed

FITCHBURG — While the Super Mart on Westminster Street was robbed by a man armed with a handgun on Monday, police believe it is not connected to the three robberies that occurred in late February and early March, according to a department spokesman.

“We don’t believe this was associated with the others,” police Capt. Matthew LeMay said Thursday.

At about 9:30 p.m. Monday, a man wearing a mask and gloves walked into the Super Mart, flashed a handgun and told the store clerk to hand over the cash in the register, LeMay said.

At that point, the clerk opened the cash register drawer and walked away, indicating to the robber that he could take what was inside.

LeMay said that walking away in that type of way is “smart for them to do.”

“It’s best to back off and let the person do what they’re going to do,” he said.

LeMay said the primary reason investigators don’t believe the robber was the same man who robbed the In & Out Convenience Store on Airport Road on Feb. 25, M&M Variety on Water Street on March 9, and Honey Land convenience store on March 16, was the description of the man who robbed Super Mart “wasn’t close” to the description of the man who robbed the others.

In each of the earlier robberies, a gun was used and the man’s face was completely covered and he was wearing gloves. He also struck one of the clerks at Honey Land leaving him with a minor injuries.

LeMay said all of the robberies are under investigation, but detectives were following some good leads on the Super Mart robbery.

Shots fired damage SUV

FITCHBURG — Police were called to a residence on Atlantic Avenue about around 10:30 p.m. Monday for a report of shots fired, police Capt. Matthew LeMay said.

No one was injured, said LeMay, but responding officers discovered an SUV with its side windows shattered by what is believed to be three rounds fired.

The suspect was on a motorcycle when the shots were fired, he said, adding the department was treating the case as vandalism.

There are no suspects, but an investigation continues, LeMay said.
