FITCHBURG — The Fitchburg Community Lions Club met briefly at the Senior Center last week to install new officers for the upcoming year.

Even though COVID-19 stopped meetings and events, the Fitchburg Community Lions have been there to support the community, according to a press release about the installation.

During the installation ceremony, at the request of the Fitchburg Education Association, the Club donated a carload of food to support the local schools, making sure no child goes hungry.

Amy Green said she is excited to be taking the lead role and building off what was a great year for the club, under the leadership of Sally Brown.

“As the ongoing outbreak of the coronavirus continues making headlines around the world, I wanted to reach out to you about this situation,” Green said. “Our mission is serving our community and making life a great experience by bringing people together. However, our biggest concern now is making sure that our members stay healthy and safe.”

She said many of the Lion’s club events have been canceled including its Oktoberfest event.

“However, once it is all safe and back to normal, we are looking forward to fully resuming with the events and activities,” Green said. “Until then, my thoughts go out to anyone who has been affected or is in the community that has had imposed restrictions on their daily life.”

The newly installed officers were also on hand to accept a donation from Operation Service of 1,000 new pairs of socks, according to the release.

In February, the Lions Club along with the two Fitchburg Masonic Lodges (Aroura and Charles W. Moore) announced a sock drive, according to the release.

The goal was to collect 1,000 new pairs of socks before winter to be given to seniors and children in need. But again, it looked like COVID-19 would put plans on hold, Green said.

Operation Service, a local nonprofit, reached out to several manufacturers and Bombas Sock Co. liked the idea and donated 2,000 pairs of socks, according to Green.

The Lions through their relationship with the Senior Center will distribute 1,000 pairs of socks to the adults and the Masons will work with local schools to make sure the additional 1,000 pairs of socks get to those who need them, she said.

The sock drive will continue through the fall but until COVID-19 eases collection points are still to be determined.

Joan Goodwin, executive director of the Senior Center, was also on hand to accept the donation.
