Flash Flood Dampens Independence Day Celebrations in Guwahati

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Since the past few weeks, the people of Guwahati were suffering from the sweltering heat and praying for some much-needed relief. But on Thursday evening, the gateway to North East was plunged into chaos as rains dragged Guwahati to a standstill puncturing Dispur’s tall claims on making it a Smart City.

In spite of extensive drainage works being carried out by the district administration; waterlogging still remains a menace for the city residents. Traffic was stalled for several hours causing a halt in the celebration of two major occasions, Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan, where most people were unable to celebrate with their loved ones due to waterlogging. The surmounting heat since the past few days was relieved somewhat by the heavy shower but other problems such as water logging reared its ugly in its stead.

Artificial floods or waterlogging did not even spare the posh and prime areas in the city forcing the residents to live under the knee and waist deep water. Transport facilities were rendered useless as people were stranded in homes and streets. The rains that provided comfort from the blistering heat on Thursday evening flooded the GS Road, RGB Road, and various others. Power-cuts in various areas for several hours proved a damper in the festive spirit.
