Small Trader shot from point blank range in Guwahati, One Arrested

Guwahati: A small trader was shot by an assailant on the night of Thursday with an air gun from a point-blank range at Sarumataria area in Guwahati.

As per reports, the small trader was identified as Ganesh Kumar Pathak was immediately shifted to GNRC Hospital in Guwahati.

Speaking to the media, Dispur Police informed that three unidentified men visited Pathak’s shop to buy cigarettes at Sarumataria. The men picked up a fight with Pathak over an issue and one of them, shot at Pathak’s face with the air gun.

Dispur Police also arrested one Nupur Kashyap in connection to the incident and also seized the air gun.

Further police investigation is on.

It may also be mentioned that according to the annual crime reports, 20 police stations under Guwahati Police Commissionerate have had 4232 registered theft cases in 2018 alone. The maximum number of theft cases are registered under Dispur police station which leaves much for speculation, as the area is one of the most highly monitored routes in the state. Violence can be curbed under swift police action alone and the acceleration in crimes has raised many red flags among the citizens with increased distrust and chaos at large.

In 2018, 842 theft cases were registered under Dispur police station, making it the highest area of theft followed by Jalukbari police station, which has a reported 489 cases and Paltan Bazaar police station, which has a number of 433 reported cases. The number of people arrested under these cases was 160 by Dispur police station, 74 by Jalukbari police station and 87 by Paltan Bazaar police station respectively with a total of 956 arrests made by the 20 police stations.

Murder cases have accelerated to 96 in the city in 2018 with 12 cases reported in Jalukbari followed by 10 cases each in Basistha and Sonapur. Although the trepidation among Guwahatians is mounting, however, 66 arrests have also been made in this regard.
