GUWAHATI: On the fifth day of the Summer Session of Assam Legislative Assembly, two associations staged their protests upholding various demands at Dispur Last Gate, here in the city, on Tuesday.

The All Assam LP School Mid-day Meal Cooks and Helpers Association staged a dharna and voiced against the privatization of mid-day meals provision to be handed over to NGOs and demanded it is scrapped. Cooks and helpers from Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Kamrup, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Dhemaji and various other places arrived to participate in the protest. The Association claimed that privatization of the scheme would render many of them jobless and as such, demanded for job security and a monthly wage of Rs 9600.

President of the Association Golapi Boro said, “There are 1 lakh 17 thousand mid-day meal workers all over Assam. Since 2004 to 2019, these workers have been sincerely at work with a monthly payment of Rs 1000. Despite the alarmingly low remuneration and the years of free service rendered, the government wishes to snatch the work from the hands of these workers and offer it up to NGOs. This will not be allowed to pass, moreover their jobs should be regularized and a monthly wage of Rs 9600 should be considered with insurance perks and health benifits.”

The Jyotikendra Sikshakarmi Sangstha (Assam) also staged a protest and posed certain demands. President of the Sangstha Munmun Chetia said, “The Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009 under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan Mission recruited teachers of the Sangstha and since 2003, these teachers have been educating children aged 6 to 14 years. At present, there are 1 lakh 60 thousand students in 527 centres being educated by 815 teachers, whose basic salary is Rs 6500 per month. As per the RTE Act, all students should receive free education, however, the teachers’ salaries are not in accordance with the Act.”

The Sangstha demanded that the salary should be as per the RTE Act for the teachers along with declaring their positions permanent among other provisions.
