GUWAHATI: The World Environment Day was observed across the State by various organizations while maintaining the social distancing norms, on Friday.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Das has taken an initiative to distribute 5,000 saplings of Boga Chandan and Agaru among temples, crematoriums, libraries and various other places.

On the other hand, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation marked the day by planting trees at the GMC park on the premises of its head office in Panbazar.

Meanwhile, the district and local committees of Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) conducted plantation drives in their respective areas. The Central committee in association with Guwahati Zila Committee planted trees at the SAKP head office in Panjbari.

Employees of Airports Authority of India (AAI), CISF personnel, airline representatives, State forest department's officials and related stakeholders carried out a plantation drive to observe the special day.

A tree plantation drive was organized at all the airports and its establishments in North East Region including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Imphal, Agartala, Shillong, Silchar, Jorhat, Lilabari, Tezu. Sapling of trees including White Jamun, Litche, Mango, Amla, Sonaru, Radha chura, Cocunut, Debdaru were planted at the colony, office premises, airport garden and passengers open green area of AAI.

AAI in North East Region has already targeted to plant more than 1 lakh saplings in and around the airport establishments. In March A a green initiative which was launched by Arvind Singh, Chairman, AAI under the intitative taken by Sanjeev Jindal, Regional Executive Director, AAI.

'Utsah gosthi'- a Non Governmental Organization planted saplings in various places of Guwahati and also felicitated some of the social activists, educationists who work for the society. The NGO also felicitated police officials, doctors and medicine shop workers who are fighting against COVID-19, with a Fulam Gamusa and a sapling. Moreover, the NGO distributed masks and hand sanitizers to needy vendors, rickshawalas etc.

The Divine Hand Welfare celebrated the day by planting trees at Japorigog High School and Sarvodaya Ashram, Chandmari.
