2nd largest hospital in Sikkim become operational from February 1

Guwahati: The people of Sikkim will be able to access free healthcare facilities from February 1 with the opening of the new 10 storied Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial Multi-Speciality Hospital (STNM) in Sochaygang which is three kilometres away from Gangtok.

The hospital is the second largest hospital in the country with 1002 bed after All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The 100 year old STNM hospital which was earlier situated in the centre of Gangtok will now shift to its new premises in Sochaygang.

The hospital took 9 years to complete with a budget of Rs. 1281 crore across 15 acres of land. The hospital has been constructed with earthquake-resistant material which can withstand an earthquake measuring up to 8 Richter scale.

The hospital has 23 operation theatres that can all function together at the same time and is expected to be on par with global standards. It is also equipped with highly sophisticated equipment including MRI, CT scanners, orthopantomogram machine and Doppler fetal monitor.

The state government has also commissioned eight buses that will run to and fro for the convenient of the patients and hospital attendants back and to the hospital free of cost. The service will be provided to the people for their convenience as the hospital is situated 3 kms away from the city of Gangtok.

A Yatri Niwas has also been constructed in the hospital premises which will help the people to stay in the lodge while coming for treatment. The Yatri Niwas is 119 bedded.

The State government is also expected to complete a college complex on the hospital premises comprising of hostels for boys and girls, lodging for teaching and non-teaching staff and an administrative block in three years. The classes of the medical college at the hospital is expected to be started from June with the approval of the state government.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of the state Pawan Chamling said that all kinds of treatment can be done at the hospital without having going outside for advanced treatment. The world-class treatment will now be available in the hospital itself.
