BSF And DRI Aizawl Rescue Exotic Birds

GUWAHATI: Acting on a tip off, a team of BSF officials and DRI Aizawl conducted a joint operation in Khamrang, between Sairang and Kawnpui on Monday. In the ensuing operation, they intercepted two vehicles, a Tata Sumo bearing (Reg. No. AS 01 FC 3425 and No. MZ 01 P 2187.) On checking the vehicles, the party recovered 26 exotic and endangered birds which were being smuggled from Myanmar and destined for Kerala. In this connection 4 persons were detained. All the four suspects are from Kerala and came to receive the consignment. stated a press release.

Two vehicle drivers along with co-drivers were also apprehended for illegally transporting these birds. A total of 26 birds which included 1 emu , 2 Crown Headed Pigeon and 23 Cockatoo (yellow crested)were recovered . Total worth of these birds were estimated to be approximately Rs 28 lakh. These illegal businesses are clandestinely carried out randomly through the Indian-Myanmar border.
