Dispur May Seek Another Extension to complete Draft NRC

GUWAHATI: Dispur, it seems, is at a crossroads with the last date for filing of claims and objections against wrongful exclusion and inclusion in the complete draft NRC nearing.

It may take a decision for seeking another extension of the last date. The panchayat poll schedule was announced on November 5 this year, and the election is not yet over. After the declaration of the rural poll results on December 12, people in rural Assam will barely have three days left with them to lodge claims against missing of names in the complete draft NRC and objections for wrongful inclusion of names in it. Dispur feels that the hustle and bustle of the rural poll in the State might have its impact on the number of filing objections and claims in the NRC update exercise. There may even be other reasons too.

According to sources, Dispur has already had a preliminary discussion on possible extension of the last date for filing of claims and objections. However, the matter is far from taking its shape with the Chief Minister remaining far too much busy with the panchayat poll campaign.

According to sources, Dispur is contemplating on holding a meeting within a day or two to take a decision to move the Supreme Court of India with the plea for another extension of the last date. If Dispur takes a positive decision, it will have to file an interlocutor application before the apex court, in consultation with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Even if such a move becomes a reality, it is the apex court that will have the last say on the issue. The Supreme Court has already extended the last date for filing of claims and objection once.

The complete draft NRC that was published on July 30 this year excluded 40.07 lakh of the 3.29 crore applicants.

Some organizations of the State also want such a step. They have already moved State NRC Coordination Prateek Hajela with a plea.
