Dispur Planning To Teach Students Japanese Language

GUWAHATI: With JETRO (the Japan External Trade Organization) evincing interest to invest in Assam for manufacturing car spare parts, Dispur is gearing itself up with around 2,000 bighas of land, besides deciding to teach students the Japanese language.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, State Industries, Commerce and Skill Development Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that the State government is going to hold talks with JETRO in New Delhi on June 19. “If everything goes as planned, we’re ready with around 2,000 bighas of land at Nagarbera in Kamrup district. JETRO is engaged in manufacturing cars in Bangladesh. It manufactures car spare parts in Korea. It has evinced interest to invest in car manufacturing sector in Assam. Of course, we’re not going to give the land free of cost. If the plan materializes, there will be a JETRO city here as done in Rajasthan with an investment of around Rs 3,500 crore. JETRO has 150 companies under it,” Patowary said.

On the would-be manpower front, Patowary said: “If JETRO city becomes a reality, we’ll need manpower. We’re contemplating on teaching students the Japanese language. Such students can get jobs in JETRO setups even elsewhere in India and rest of the world, including Japan,” Patowary said, and added: “Even though the Japanese language is taught in a few institutes in Assam, we don’t have any institutes empanelled for teaching the language. I’ll have to take up the matter with the Union ministry for empanelling a few Assam institutes for teaching Japanese.”

JETRO is a government-related organization that works to promote mutual trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world. Originally established in 1958 to promote Japanese exports abroad, JETRO’s core focus in the 21st century has shifted toward promoting foreign direct investment into Japan and helping small to medium Japanese firms maximize their global export potential.
