Dispur Takes Stern Steps Against Fleeing Foreigners

GUWAHATI: Considering the huge number of absconders among those tagged as ‘Declared Foreigners’ by the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) in Assam, Dispur has decided to take stern steps by filing ‘First Information Reports’ (FIRs) against them. This is for the first time that such a step has been initiated against these people who are reportedly absconding after being identified by the FTs across the State at various points of time. According to official records, “Out of 91,609 declared foreigners (since 1985 till March 2018), 72,486 declared foreigners are absconding as on March 31, 2018. The percentage is 79.12% which is quite huge.”

Against this backdrop, the Home and Political department has also directed the Border branch of Assam Police to intensify operations for tracing and arresting these absconders.

The Supreme Court is hearing the cases on ‘Declared Foreigners’ and ‘detention camps’; and the apex court expressed its concern. In fact, the magnitude of this issue surfaced during the course of these hearings.

Earlier, the Assam Police had constituted 500 task forces to trace the absconding ‘Declared Foreigners’. Reportedly, these task forces failed to achieve much success in this regard.
