Dispur To Take Up Issue With Supreme Court Afresh

GUWAHATI: Dispur is going to approach the Supreme Court of India with the plea of sample revivification of the complete draft NRC afresh. The complete draft NRC was published on July 30, 2018.

Dispur continues to cast doubt on the fewer number NRC applicants from some neighboring districts of Bangladesh left out in the complete draft NRC. This is why Dispur feels the necessity of such a sample revivification of the names included in the complete draft NRC.

The last interlocutory application submitted by Dispur before the apex court had two pleas – one-month extension of the claim-and-objections phase of NRC update and sample revivification of the complete draft NRC. The apex court kept mum on the issue of sample revivification even as it extended the period of claim-and-objection phase of NRC by 15 days till December 31, 2018. Earlier this phase was supposed to conclude by December 15, 2018.

The claim-and-objection process of NRC update is going to be closed on Monday. State NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela is set to submit a comprehensive report on claims and objections to the Supreme Court. After getting the report on claims and objections, the apex court is likely to hear the NRC case in February 2019. Dispur is trying to avail that hearing to make its plea for sample revivification of the complete draft NRC before the apex court.

The complete draft NRC in Assam that was published on July 30, 2018 has left out 40,07,707 applicants. Total applicants for inclusion of their names in the NRC were 3.29 crore.
