East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh For Policy To Deal With Drug-Related Crimes

SHILLONG: East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh on Saturday said that the State Government should immediately come up with a policy relating to drug-related crimes.

Lyngdoh said this in relation to the recent case of Hapish Nongbri (53) whose body was recovered yesterday from Mawiong Sung near Puriang, East Khasi Hills and brought to the Shillong Civil Hospital hospital for post-mortem.

It may be mentioned that on June 21, the police had arrested three people from Lawsohtun (Block II) who are suspected to be involved in the murder of Nongbri. From among the three who had been arrested, one of them led the police to the place where they had dumped the body of the deceased.

The deceased who hails from Pdengshnong Malki had gone missing since June 15 along with his local cab bearing the registration ML- 05- G- 7436. It may be recalled that the local taxi of the deceased was found from the parking space of the Forest and Environment department at Lawmali Pyllun on Wednesday last.

“As an MLA I am with this aggrieved family. I find that even though there is a strict law in place, there are many loopholes as far as immediately solving Nongrbi’s case is concerned,” she said.

Terming the incident as bitter that a grown man fell victim in the hands of drug addicts, she said “I find that in a missing person’s case it is very difficult for the police to proceed in the investigation.”

Lyngdoh while appreciating the work of the police in solving the case and doing their best with the available resources in recovering the body of Nongbri, however rued the fact that the post-mortem procedure takes so much time.

Talking about menace of drugs, she said, “It is unimaginable to learn that drug addicts don’t think twice to take a human life for a small amount of money.”

“We need a stringent policy that empowers not only the victims and families but the police, the hospitals and doctors as well,” she added.
