Haphazard Parking A New Normal Of Sorts In Guwahati City

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: Violating traffic rules like parking vehicles in no-parking zones has become a new normal of sorts in Guwahati these days. And this is done by educated people who are expected to abide by traffic rules so as to help restore traffic discipline.

Some instances that are commonplace in Guwahati will suffice what this reporter wants to drive home. There is a parking place each under the flyovers at Ulubari, Bhangagarh, Ganeshguri and Six Mile. If anyone has to park his/her vehicle in any of these parking lots, he/she has to pay Rs 10 per vehicle.

Strangely enough, a number of people owning luxurious cars are seen to park their cars in no-parking zones even when there are parking places nearby. By resorting to such an unruly parking, such people create traffic snarls and chaos in the city. Sometimes vehicles are parked in no-parking zones on either side of roads, thereby badly infringing roads that are strictly meant for running vehicles and others.

When caught, such financially well-off people are not stingy to pay fines amounting to Rs 300-500. One has to rack their brains as to why such people are not ready to Rs 10 and park their cars in any of the authorized parking lot?

Vehicle drivers and others often blame it on traffic managers for every ill in vehicular traffic. However, vehicle drivers also do things which traffic rules and regulations don’t permit.

The problem of parking cars in no-parking zones is being experienced at many places in Guwahati like the GS Road, RG Baruah Road, MG Road and many others.

A traffic personnel who charges fines for parking of vehicles in no-parking areas said: “There are people who even park vehicles in shielded no-parking areas by breaking cones. We start our duty from 7 in the morning. Every day charges fines amounting to around Rs 7,000 or more from people parking vehicles in each no-parking area. This is happening every day. We have dearth of people for manning each and every no-parking area in Guwahati.”
