High Court Asks Dispur to Give Demonstration in Open Court

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has asked Dispur to give a demonstration (presentation) in the open court on the common database of declared and suspected foreigners, besides doubtful voters on January 31, 2019.

On November 13 this year, the high court issued summonses to the Chief Secretary, the Additional Chief Secretary in charge of Home and Political Department, the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Border, the Home and Political Principal Secretary and the Chief Electoral Officer of the State to appear before it on December 6 and explain as to why the common database had not been finalized even after eight months of the initiation of the matter.

All the five top officials appeared before the high court on Thursday and sought a period of six months more. They told the court that the preparation of the database is underway and that they will require six months more. The high court, however, rejected anymore extension of time outright and asked them to give a presentation on their preparation of the common database, if need be, of only a few districts on January 31, 2019.
