Kohima to come up with five projects under Smart City project

Guwahati: The Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) approved five out of seven projects under the Smart City Mission (SCM) in the first phase.

Kohima Municipal Council administrator, Kovi Meyase announced it on Thursday that the projects are currently in progress in Kohima Town.

Meyase expressed joy for the implementation of the project which was lacked last year. The projects have been implemented since September 2018 at a total cost of Rs 116.63 crore and said that the project will be completed in time and the standard of living in the state capital would be improved.

Meyase further informed that Phase-I work includes beautification of Kohima town at an estimated project cost of Rs. 10.58 crore, two multi-level parking slots at Old NST at a cost of Rs. 28.79 crore and Old Medical Directorate for Rs. 31.21 crore, redevelopment of Old Assembly Secretariat which is sanctioned at Rs. 4.51 crore and Kohima smart city and KMC offices with a budget of Rs. 1.32 crore.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared for cultural hall which will cost Rs. 36.22 crore which has been approved and a draft tender has been sent to CE (H) for approval. He also informed that the tender for wi-fi project in Kohima town has been pit up at a cost of Rs. 4crore.

The Municipal Administrator also said that the autonomy and its independent ins its functioning is paramount. "We are hopeful that we will be able to maintain the project so that we can chart out our smart city plans as envisioned by the citizens and not otherwise," Meyase said.

The urban development ministry has also sanctioned Rs. 111crore so far giving Rs. 2crore in advance for the preparation of the projects.

The state government should also contribute a matching share of 50% of the central release as per the guidelines and the Nagaland government has released Rs. 2crore as its matching share.

Kohima got selected as a smart city on September 20, 2016 during the second round of competition, while Kohima Smart City Development Ltd (KSCDL) was incorporated on March 24, 2017 under the Companies’ Act, 2013.

As per the smart city mission guideline, the SPV – constituted for KSCDL on March 9 2017 – will plan, apprises approve, release funds, implement, operate, monitor and evaluate the smart city development project.
