NRC core issue of protests at Dispur Last Gate

GUWAHATI, Sept 24: With the beginning of autumn session of the State Assembly on Monday, various issues related to NRC updation have become a core agenda of protests at Dispur Last Gate for a number of organizations from across the State.

As such, the Bengali Joint CoOrdination Committee, Asom with support from 14 other Bengali organizations on Monday, while staging protest at Last Gate, stressed that the NRC authority must consider any sort of documents issued prior to 25 March, 1971. They also said that the D-voters having legitimate documents must be included in the NRC list. The Committee said, “NRC must unconditionally include the names of those individuals who have already been declared Indians by courts.”

The committee also shouted slogans demanding an end to harassment of Bengalis in the name of NRC. Reiterating their demand for removal of NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela from NRC duty, the Committee said, “NRC Seva Kendra’s duties and responsibilities should be made public and the deceased who were victimized by the fault of the NRC authority should be compensated with Rs 10 lakh.”

On the other hand, while demonstrating protest at Last Gate on Monday, the All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) also said that ever since the beginning of the NRC updation work, numerous organizations and individuals of the Muslim community of the state have been cooperating in various capacities.

However, the ABMSU alleged that a large number of Muslims have been whimsically left out. Hence the ABMSU has demanded to assign impartial officers so that no bona fide citizens are left out from the final NRC. The ABMSU also demanded to keep in force of those five documents which were recently removed from the List A. The ABMSU also demanded to speedier trial of the D-voters.

Meanwhile, the ABMSU also demanded to expedite the investigation of Lafikul Islam killing case.
