NRC Update: Dispur For Probe Against People Not Making Claims

GUWAHATI: Dispur has seriously taken the typical instance of a large section of people who have not made any claims for inclusion in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) despite their names not being included in the complete draft NRC. However, these people earlier applied for inclusion of their names in the draft NRC.

According to a source in the Home and Political Department, “The matter is taken up seriously as the status of these people appears to be doubtful.” In this regard, the Home and Political Department has issued directives to the border branch of the Assam police to carry out inquiries in consultation with the State NRC coordinator.

However, whether the inquiry sought to be carried out by Dispur will be successful remains to be seen as only the NRC authority possesses the data on such people who have not made any claims for inclusion despite their earlier applications for inclusion. On the other hand, the NRC authority is bound by the Supreme Court directive that forbids it to share any information on the NRC with any agency. Significantly, the NRC authority did not share such information even during the Assembly session earlier. Against this backdrop, the proposed probe will be successful only if the NRC authority shares the vital data of such ‘doubtful’ people with the border police.

A total of 40.07 lakh people’s names were not included in the complete draft NRC published on July 30, 2018 against 3.29 crore people applied for inclusion of their names in the NRC. Following the publication of the complete draft NRC, the NRC authority allowed the public scopes to make ‘claims to include names’ and also raise ‘objections against names already included’ in the register.

At present hearings on claims and objections are going on. While altogether 36.2 lakh people made claims, objections were raised against 2 lakh names that were already included in the draft NRC.
