Opposition And Various Organizations Sit-In Protests At Dispur Last Gate

GUWAHATI: On the second day of the Budget Session of Assam Legislative Assembly, opposition parties as well as various organizations, thundered against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the house once again. At Dispur Last Gate, here in the city, diverse organizations, along with disagreements regarding CAB, staged protests upholding their own various demands.

The union of All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Assam, forwarded a memorandum to the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal addressing their disapproval against CAB. The union initiated eleven demands for the centre to see through. The President of AAGSU, Prem Tamang said, “CAB needs to be scrapped for good.” He also stated that ST status along with a No Objection certificate needs to be provided to the Gorkha community. “6 Constitutional Assembly seats and 1 Lok Sabha seat needs to be reserved for our community. We are being shoved into the periphery and as such, our Tihar festival needs to be recognized and declared as a holiday by the government”, Tamang opined. Among other demands, the Union also desired that an MLA from the Gorkha Community be appointed as Minister.

The Assam Anganwadi Worker-Helper Union (AAWHU) also was part of the protest demonstration in the city. Scraping of CAB and the Central Government Rules and Regulations of September 7, 2015, as their prime demands, they expressed certain community aid demands as well.

The Sodou Asom Madhyana Bhojan Karmachari Union (SAMBKU) protested against the decision of the government to entrust NGO’s with providing the mid-day meals in schools. According to the union, there are 15 NGO’s running in the state that provides mid-day meal which does not meet the guidelines set down by the centre.
