Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad sounds bugle against Citizenship Bill

‘Jobs can’t be greater than the State’

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Terming the governments at Dispur and New Delhi ‘irresponsible’, the SAKP (Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad) has sounded its agitation bugle and chanted the Assam Agitation slogan afresh – Job is not greater than the State – against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The SAKP discussed the Citizenship Bill in detail at its central executive committee meeting held at Tamulpur on Sunday. The meeting decided a series of agitation against the controversial Bill from January 23. On that day, the SAKP is going to support AASU’s Bajra Ninad (thunderbolt) programme all over the State against the Citizenship Bill. On January 30, the Parishad is going to observe a three-hour sit-in strike from 11 am to 2 pm in front of all deputy commissioner and sub-divisional offices in the State against the Bill.

The SAKP wants to get its message across that it was an integral part of the six-year-long Assam Agitation from 1979 to 1985, and also that 68 of the over 860 Assam Agitation martyrs were State Government employees.

The SAKP says that the Assam Accord spells it out in no uncertain terms that any foreigner entering Assam after March 24, 1971 has to be deported from the State. When the cut-off date as mentioned in the Assam Accord is accepted by all parties and organizations, the move to accord Indian citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindus entering the State after 1971 is not only against the interests of Assam and the country, but is also against the ethos of the Indian Constitution, the SAKP leaders say. The SAKP further says that the governments in the State and at the Centre are irresponsible and that they have pushed the State government employees towards another bout of agitation.
