ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), taking cognizance of the allotment of MBBS seat for Arunachal Pradesh, demands Central Pool MBBS/BDS quota for the current academic session 2019-20 with equal numbers of MBBS/BDS seats similar to the 2018-19 academic session.

It is learned that the Medical Council of India (MCI) has allotted 25 MBBS and 3 BDS seats in the previous session. However, it is learnt that the MCI has denied allocating the same in the current academic session.

The Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Science (TRIHMS) is the first State-owned medical college which started its academic session from August 2018 with 50 students. According to the norms of the Medical Council of India (MCI), MBBS seats from Central Pool Quota will not be provided to the State once the medical college is established.

However, the State-owned TRIHMS is yet to be fully recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). At such a juncture, the denial of the allocation of seats has gone totally in disadvantage for the students who have dream of becoming medical students.

The AAPSU, in tune to the request to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, placed by the Directorate of Medical Education demands for the allocation of seats for the next four years till TRIHMS is fully recognized by MCI.

The Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nada, in a letter on August 6, 2019 to the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, acknowledged the need for the allocation of Central Pool Quota seats and increased of seats from 50 to 100 seats. It has also been brought to the Union’s knowledge that the MCI had given green signal for approval of 100 seats in TRIHMS. However, due to inadequate infrastructure, such allocation has not been implemented.

The Government of Arunachal Pradesh allocates seats for All India Quota (15%) in TRIHMS. However, the MCI has denied allocating seats for the State of Arunachal Pradesh. The AAPSU demands the Government of Arunachal Pradesh to take necessary steps and apprise the Government of India for the allocation of seats for Arunachal Pradesh.
