With the State of Assam showing a sharp uptick in the number of coronavirus cases, several areas in Guwahati, Assam, have been marked as containment zones to prevent an outbreak of the dreaded contagion. At the same time, some areas where cases were detected earlier, are no longer being marked as containment zones.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Road to the North, Ram Nagar to the South, Santipath to the East, and the residence of Jairam Bharali to the West have been set are the extremities of the latest containment zone. Violation of the law will be punishable under relevant sections of the law, said an order issued from the Kamrup (M) DC's office.

Areas which are no longer Containment Zones:

The 'containment zone' statuses of Amiyo Nagar in Guwahati, campus of the girls hostel of the Regional Dental College at Bhangagarh, and the area covering a residential area within the B. Baruah Cancer Institute in Guwahati were lifted on Thursday, May 22.

Meanwhile, Assam Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the Government will not resort to the practice of 'colour coding' districts. Instead, Sarma said, designated areas will be marked as 'containment zone' after detection of virus cases and promptly sealed off. An area surrounding the containment zone will marked as a buffer zone.

"Our containment policy is this – when a case is detected in an area, that area will be visited by the Deputy Commissioner and the District Health A and the area that could be infected by the patient that will be marked as a containment zone and an area surrounding that will be marked as buffer zone", Sarma informed the media in Guwahati.

Two more test Positive Sarma said that only essential activities will be allowed in the containment zones and a few other activities will be allowed in the buffer zones. This step will be taken so that a situation of panic does not arise in the district and "normal economic activity" is not disturbed, Sarma said, adding, "Typically, we will attack where the infection is reported from so that people from far-off areas are not impacted." Henceforth, Sarma said, "precision-based" activity will be taken so as to strike the disease at its base. "However, if a district reports more than 200 cases, we will have to mark that district as red zone or other categories", he added.
