Congress Is United In Meghalaya: Luizinho Faleiro

SHILLONG: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge North East Luizinho Faleiro has said that the Congress party is united as one including all its MLAs in Meghalaya.

It may be reminded that a few months back there were reports that around 11 MLAs of the Congress, mostly from the Garo Hills, were intending to join the National People’s Party (NPP) and other political parties in the State.

Speaking to The Sentinel via phone, Luizinho Faleiro said, “I visited Meghalaya recently, and I also had discussions with various party leaders including the MLAs of the Congress party. We are united and the party will further strengthen its style of functioning in the State. None of our MLAs is trying to jump ship and join other political parties, and I stated this last time also when I was in Shillong.”

He also said that during his visit to the State he also had discussion with Ampaareen Lyngdoh — the MLA from East Shillong constituency.

However, a report had gone viral that former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and former Union Minister from Assam, Pawan Singh Ghatowar, were planning to join the BJP. It was was broadcast in one of the Guwahati-based online news websites on Saturday. In this connection, Dr Sangma has also dismissed reports of him and his entire family joining the BJP and termed such reports as “fake” and “malicious”.

While lambasting the media for “becoming victims of social media narratives”, Dr Sangma on Saturday said that he will file a complaint with the police against those responsible for starting the rumour while asking the Meghalaya Cyber Crime Cell to investigate the matter.

Senior Congress leader Dr Sangma is at present the leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly. His wife Dikkanchi Shira, his daughter Miani Shira and his brother Zenith Sangma are also members of the Assembly.

Meanwhile, Congress MP from Shillong Parliamentary constituency Vincent H Pala has also dismissed certain reports claiming many Congress leaders in North East would be joining the BJP as “misleading and incorrect”.

In the 60-member Assembly with an effective strength of 59, the Congress has 19 members.

The BJP which is supporting the National People’s Party-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government headed by Conrad Sangma has two members. The ruling alliance comprising NPP has 20 members, United Democratic Party (eight), People’s Democratic Front (four), Hill State People’s Party (two), Nationalist Congress Party (one) besides one Independent member.

Lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement legislator, Adelbert Nongrum is neither supporting the ruling coalition nor the Opposition.
