Shillong dwellers flay indiscriminate power cuts

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: Several parts of the town are experiencing power cuts after the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd. (MeECL) announced load shedding hours for the entire State. However, numerous consumers are complaining that they are made to deal with darkness for longer hours besides the load shedding timings already announced by the MeECL.

Consumers from Greater Laban, Jingkieng, Nongthymmai, Greater Laitumkhrah, Police Bazar, European Ward among others have complained about the excess load shedding hours.

Many among them have told The Sentinel that the power cuts have affected their daily activities. Many businesses dependent on electricity have also been affected.

The affected consumers of MeECL said that if one counts the numerous smaller power cuts in a day than it can be ascertained that a consumer is made to deal with almost double the official hours for load shedding.

One such customer who wanted to get some DTP work done for his photo studio at a printing press in the town’s commercial hub, Police Bazaar, said that he could not do so because of the long power cut in the area. Similarly, office work -- both private and public -- also stands affected due to these indiscriminate power cuts. Householders’ complaints, however, top this list.

All the consumers have concurred that in today’s date, electricity is as essential as water and many inconveniences are caused whenever their supplies are curtailed.
