Bangladesh Initiative to Repatriate Rohingyas Fails

Agartala: The second initiative to repatriate Rohingyas refugees sheltered in Bangladesh to their ancestral home at Mayanmar faced the same fate of the first one as none of the refugees reported to the repatriation centers to go back to their own country.

The authorities were fully prepared and vehicles were also ready to carry them, but none of the refugees came forward forcing the Bangladesh commissioner for Relief and Rehabilitation Muhammad Abul Kalam Azad to declare the initiative as abandoned.

Addressing a press conference he said none of the refugees agreed to go back.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen described the development as unfortunate. However, he said the repatriation process is not going to be closed.

The Bangladesh government has taken the initiative following a bipartite understanding and necessary arrangement was made at three points – the Sal Bagan refugee camps at Teknaf, Kerantali Transit Camp and Dhumdhum transit camp Naikkhangcheri. Senior government officials, representatives of the UNHCR and a large number of the security forces were present but all went in vain as none of the Rohingyas refugees turned up to go back to their home.
