GUWAHATI: The State Health Department has sent an SOS to the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to postpone all public meetings in their respective districts as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus disease.

“It is advised to postpone all public meetings in your district. The elected representatives, as well as other organizers, may be advised accordingly in view of this public health emergency,” said an official instruction issued by the Commissioner & Secretary, Health & Family Welfare department said.

On the other hand, the Secretary of Social Welfare department has written to all DCs seeking queries about the upcoming mass gathering events in their districts. The DCs have been asked to reduce such mass gatherings to avoid the spread of novel coronavirus disease.

“In case any such mass gathering is organized, States may take necessary action to guide the organizers on precautions to be taken as per the risk communication material already sent so as to avoid any Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases and Influenza-Like Illness (ILIs) including Convid-19,” the Secretary of Social Welfare has told the deputy commissioners.

On the other hand, N95 mask and sanitizers, recommended for use by the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent infection from novel coronavirus, are running out of stock in the city.

A man whose daughter studies in Delhi bought a mask and sanitizer and couriered them since these items are in short supply in the national capital.

Meanwhile while admitting to a shortage of masks and sanitizers, Minister of State for Health Pijush Hazarika said that people could maintain personal hygiene by washing their hands with soap and also use the “general mask”.

“People should use sanitizer before eating or they should wash their hands with soap or handwash. People should use the N95 mask and if this is not available in the market then one can also use the general mask,” Hazarika said.
