GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has asked Dispur to ensure that a valuable academic year is not lost due to the prevalent COVID-19 scenario in the State.

A meeting held between the leaders of AASU and representatives of various teachers organizations on Thursday reached at a consensus that even though the State is faced with an unprecedented challenge, it is equally important to take steps to prevent loss of the academic year.

A press release issued by AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath, after the meeting on Thursday evening, stated that once the educational institutions reopen the government must take innovative steps to compensate academic losses due to COVID driven lockdown.

"After reopening of schools, colleges and universities, the teachers will have to conduct extra classes on weekdays and full classes on Saturdays. The government will have to reduce the number of holidays to enable the schools and colleges to compensate the academic losses. The Education department will have to take innovative and flexible measures to complete the syllabus within this academic year," the AASU said.

The AASU has also opposed the State Government's move to shift the academic year from January 1 to December 31 to April 1 to March 31. On this issue, a high-level delegation of AASU met the Chairman of the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) and submitted its suggestions on Thursday. The students' organization is of the opinion that the academic year starting from January 1 and ending in December 31 is conducive for Assam considering its social and ecological environment.
