The services range from welfare benefits and information centres to a wide range of Macmillan specialists, GP facilitators, psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, dieticians and physiotherapists.

Among those recieving funding is Doctor Gill Clements, who ensure people with cancer get the best possible standard of care from their GP.

She is responsible for improving cancer care across the area by educating, sharing best practice, influencing and leading other GPs.

Dr Clements said it was vital GPs have the knowledge and skills needed in identifying cancer, and that treatment begins without delay when it is diagnosed.

"I am honoured to be working for such a well known and successful charity," she said.

"Macmillan is a very supportive organisation and provides a great network of similar minded GPs and other professionals. We can really make a difference where the NHS is struggling and develop innovative services for patients.

"At the moment, in my role as a Macmillan GP, I am working with the local hospice and others to improve end of life care. I act as a liaison between the hospital and GP practices if there is a particular problem with a patient pathway and look at ways to improve this. My role gives me the opportunity to provide this support."
