AFC Telford warned of Celtic banana skin

Skipper Shane Sutton has warned his AFC Telford United team-mates to be prepared for a battle against Farsley Celtic in the FA Trophy.

The Bucks host the side from West Yorkshire in first round action tomorrow.

Sutton and Co are the favourites as they are a tier above Celtic, but the no-nonsense centre-half said: “It’s not going to be an easy game for us. They might be a division below, in the Northern Premier, but they’re above Warrington who knocked us out of the FA Cup.

“That’s often what it’s all about with cup games, the psychological part of it.

“There may be a division’s difference, but it’ll be just as difficult as a league game.

“We’ve got to make sure we are prepared individually, so then we can be a better team.”

Telford boss Gavin Cowan made the final of the competition as a player with Canvey Island so is keen to do well in the competition. And Sutton insists the players share their manager’s ambition.

“A few of the players here have done well in the competition before so it’s something we’ve spoken about quite a bit,” he added.

“It’s a big cup game. A few of the boys know some of their lads and they’re good players so it’ll be a good test.

“We want to build momentum and if we all go and perform at eight or nine out of ten, that should, hopefully, be enough to get a good win at home, and see us through to the next round.”
