Early morning fire in Charleston prompts large FDNY response

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-- Firefighters battled a structural fire early Sunday morning at what FDNY officials have deemed a vacant house in Charleston.

The FDNY responded at about 5:30 a.m. to a basement fire in the two-story, 50-by-50 foot structure near the intersection of Crabtree Avenue and Turner Street, according to an FDNY spokeswoman.

Officials said firefighters battled smoke and flames for about an hour, and no injuries were reported.
