Man shot in Berry Houses knows his assailant, source says

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The man shot inside the Berry Houses on Wednesday night told police he knows the gunman, a source with knowledge of the investigation told the Advance.

The 40-year-old victim was transported to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze following the incident, which occurred at about 5:58 p.m. inside 209 Jefferson St. in Dongan Hills, according to a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. The man is considered likely to recover from his injuries.

The victim said that the shooting occurred during a dispute in his fourth-floor apartment and that his girlfriend witnessed the incident, the source said.

He told police that his assailant shot him one time in the face and then fled the scene in an unknown direction, the police spokesman said.

The source said the victim told police the name of his assailant, who is in his 20s.

No arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon. A police spokesman was unable to provide information about the incident that led to the shooting.
