STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A 28-year-old man with a criminal record stands accused of bursting into an apartment in the Berry Houses in Dongan Hills and shooting a man in the face while a woman and two young children were present.

George Washington of Campbell Avenue, West Brighton, was arrested at the 122nd Precinct stationhouse on Wednesday morning in connection with the assault on Nov. 20 at about 5:58 p.m. in the apartment complex on Jefferson Street, according to the criminal complaint and police.

Washington allegedly banged on the front door of the fourth-floor apartment. A woman who lives in the apartment opened the door. Washington then brandished a gun and fired once, striking a 40-year-old man in the left cheek, the complaint alleges.

Two young children were inside the apartment when the shooting occurred, according to the complaint.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left cheek, bleeding and substantial pain.

Washington has been charged with attempted murder, burglary, attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon, assault, criminal possession of a firearm and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was convicted of burglary in June 2016 in state Supreme Court in Manhattan and sentenced to five years probation for that felony, according to the criminal complaint.

The suspect, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs about 180 pounds, is being held at the Manhattan Detention Complex in lieu of $225,000 bail. He is due back in Criminal Court on Monday, according to public records.

An attorney for the defendant did not immediately comment.

Shortly after the shooting, a source told the Advance that the victim supplied the police with the name of the shooter. The victim said that the shooting occurred during a dispute in his fourth-floor apartment and that his girlfriend witnessed the incident, the source said.
