Just about a day ago, Cyclone Gaja had formed in the Bay of Bengal. Gaja is currently in proximity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In view of this, heavy to isolated very heavy rains have occurred over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the last 24 hours. In fact, three-digit rains have also been observed at one of the stations. Winds have also been gusty over the region.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Long Island recorded a whopping 100 mm of rainfall followed by Port Blair witnessed 53 mm of rains, Car Nicobar 40 mm, Maya Bandar 33 mm, and Hut Bay 20 mm.

Now, the Cyclone is expected to intensify into a severe cyclone during the next 24 hours and is expected to move in a west-southwest direction towards South Tamil Nadu Coast.

Therefore, rainfall is expected to remain heavy over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next 24 hours. Thus, tourists are advised to avoid visiting the Islands for another 24 hours. Tourists who are already in the Islands should stay away from the Sea shore and avoid any water sport activities for now.

Thereafter, due to the movement of the system, rains will reduce over the Islands and they will be safe to visit once again.
