The Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development has expressed his concerns by saying that Amaravati as a capital for the state is not a feasible idea. Large portions of Amaravati were flooded after rains making it a flood prone area.
As per our experts, Amaravati has a network of rivers nearby with the Godavari River flowing between East and West Godavari. These rivers run from west to east in Bay of Bengal.
Floods are seen in Andhra Pradesh either through storms, or when the rivers breach their banks. Amaravati lies on the banks of the rivers, due to which whenever it rains too much, the Krishna river will cause Amaravati to get flooded.
As far as the coastline of Andhra Pradesh is concerned, during the Monsoon, it is not prone to floods because systems form in West Bengal and Odisha. However, Monsoon rains sometimes give high ended activity and they cause rivers to overflow.
In the post Monsoon season, during October, systems go to Bangladesh. However, in the months of November and December, Andhra Pradesh is very prone to cyclone hit. Amaravati is not very far from coast and does come under influence of systems.
Farther we go better it is, Rayalaseema is one region in Andhra Pradesh that does not get too affected by the systems as they do not travel this far and Monsoon rains are also not on the higher side for this part of Andhra Pradesh. Pockets like Anantapur, Kurnool, Cudappah, Chittoor, YSR are less prone to heavy rains.
